Name the length being measured
A length on a garment drawing may describe the exposed decoration rather than the piece delivered to sewing. Label finished visible length, cut length and purchased length as different fields. Show the measurement path, especially around a curve. Without those labels, two teams can agree on the same number while planning different amounts of material.
List the construction additions separately
Ask the garment team to define turned ends, overlap and any part enclosed in a seam. Add these only where the actual construction requires them. For example, a visible section of 40 cm with two agreed 2 cm end allowances gives a 44 cm cut length before motif adjustment. These figures illustrate arithmetic, not a recommended allowance or a product specification.
Treat motif alignment as another step
Place the proposed cut length on the real repeat and check the first and last visible motifs. The cutter may need to shift the starting point or leave an interval unused. Record this separately from the folded-end allowance so it is not counted twice. Trial the resulting piece on the garment before multiplying by the planned production quantity.
Quote cut pieces and roll lengths differently
State whether you want continuous material for your own cutting or pre-cut pieces for an agreed layout. Ask whether pre-cut supply is available rather than assuming it is included. Show the acceptable length basis, quantity and motif start in the request. A roll quotation and a cut-piece quotation describe different supply tasks even if their total nominal length is similar.
- Visible, cut and purchased lengths named separately.
- Construction allowances and motif waste not counted twice.
- Supply requested as continuous material or confirmed cut pieces.
