Measure one repeat at consistent points

Choose an unmistakable point in the motif, such as the centre of a large flower, and measure to the same point in the next repeat. Keep the sample flat without pulling it. Record the measurement unit and photograph the ruler with both points visible. This is different from measuring a single flower's width or the space between the edges of two flowers.

Calculate the cut, not just the visible length

Suppose a sample has a confirmed 12 cm repeat and your layout requires five complete repeats per garment. That gives 60 cm before any seam, join or end allowance. For 80 identical garments, the repeat portion is 48 m. These are invented planning figures, not catalogue dimensions. Add only the allowances established by your cutting trial, and calculate other garment sizes separately.

Check what a roll really yields

A total order length does not guarantee the required number of uninterrupted cuts. Ask for the proposed roll lengths, any joins and the minimum continuous section needed for your pattern. Lay the required cuts onto those lengths. A remainder may be long enough in centimetres yet start in the wrong motif position, so count usable complete cuts rather than total length alone.

Keep the quantity sheet traceable

Attach the reference, sample repeat, size quantities and cutting diagram to the enquiry. Separate garment consumption, sampling material and agreed reserve. Confirm the sales unit before comparing quotations expressed in metres, yards or rolls. If a different variant is proposed, measure its repeat again rather than carrying over the old calculation simply because the product page or colour family looks similar.

  • Repeat measured between identical motif landmarks.
  • Cuts per size and continuous-length requirements.
  • Explicit garment, sample and reserve quantities.
