Separate garment grading from component size
A garment pattern can be graded while a purchased neckline or appliqué remains the same physical size. List the component dimensions separately from the garment size label. Decide whether the design will move the decoration, change its spacing or require a different component for some sizes. None of those choices establishes that the supplier can resize an existing catalogue item.
Use stable placement landmarks
Choose garment landmarks such as centre front, a seam or the neckline edge and show where each decoration is measured from. State whether the dimension locates the motif centre, top edge or another defined point. A note saying lower on the larger size is difficult to reproduce. A marked drawing gives the pattern and purchasing teams the same reference system.
Review the range, not just the base size
Compare the smallest, a middle and the largest intended size on patterns or samples, then check any size with a different construction. Look at the clearance from seams, the visible panel and the relationship between paired decorations. Record which sizes can share a component and which need further development. Keep unresolved variants out of a blanket approval for the whole range.
Turn the grading record into order lines
Create separate quantity lines for every confirmed component variant and the garment sizes using it. Link each line to the accepted placement drawing. Add the catalogue references to your enquiry and attach this mapping yourself in the conversation. If a proposed substitute changes size, return to the grading review rather than treating a similar-looking motif as a direct replacement.
