Match openings, not outer widths alone
Two neckline pieces with similar outer dimensions may have very different inner openings. Trace the garment neckline and place a measured sample over it. Mark the shoulder points, centre front and lowest point of the opening. Compare the available attachment area with the intended seam line. The outside silhouette does not show whether the inner edge can sit correctly on your pattern.
Move from the table to the dress form
Baste the piece onto a trial garment using the intended base cloth. Review the chest and shoulder curves from the front and side. Look for gaps, raised edges or distortion of the cloth. Do not stretch the appliqué into position and call the fit approved; the trial should show whether the chosen piece works in the garment's natural shape.
Agree any alteration before cutting
If the piece needs repositioning or alteration, discuss the exact area with the sewing team and supplier. Do not assume a stitched connection can be cut without affecting the construction. Compare a different reference or neckline shape before committing to a modification. Keep photographs and measurements of the approved trial, including the reverse and the attachment points.
Send a fit enquiry with a pattern reference
Provide the chosen reference, inner opening measurements and a marked pattern image. State the garment size range and pieces per garment. Request a physical sample before bulk purchase and ask whether the proposed variant has the same outline as the gallery image. A ruler view is useful for shortlisting but does not replace the three-dimensional fitting trial.
