Trace the complete edge

Trace the cape edge on the pattern from one front end around to the other. Mark changes in curvature, seams and any fastening point. Decide whether the same border runs throughout or stops before the neck. A close-up of an attractive trim does not show how several metres of decoration will read across the cape as a whole.

Review folds rather than a flat strip only

Temporarily position a sample on a fabric mock-up and allow the cape to form its normal folds. Watch where motifs overlap or disappear between folds. Compare a dense section with a quieter alternative at the same placement. Do not infer softness or recovery from a photo; ask the supplier which sample can be provided for your construction trial.

Inspect the reverse at the front corners

Lift each front corner as a wearer might when arranging the cape. Check the exposed backing, attachment stitches and cut ends. Decide whether a facing or another finishing method belongs in the garment specification. If a border is attractive on one side only, that need not reject it automatically, but the visible reverse must be addressed by the sewing team.

Specify continuity before requesting quantity

Send the traced edge length, the number of garments and your acceptable join locations. Ask whether the chosen variant can be supplied in lengths suited to that plan; do not assume every roll is one uninterrupted piece. Include photographs of the corner and reverse requirements with the reference so the quotation and sample discussion cover the complete border.

  • Full edge traced with curvature and join locations.
  • Folds, front corners and reverse inspected.
  • Continuous-length needs included in the enquiry.
