Describe both long edges
Ask for a full-width photograph that shows both long edges. Identify which edge has scallops or projecting motifs and which has a plain attachment margin. Descriptions such as single-edge and double-edge can be used differently by sellers. Draw the required outline beside the selected image so the supplier confirms the same construction rather than relying on the category name.
Choose the edge that remains visible
Place the sample across the intended seam or opening. Mark any part concealed under fabric and measure the decoration that remains visible. A second decorative edge may be useful for an exposed band but unnecessary if it is buried in a seam. Compare candidates at the same visible width; otherwise the larger total width can give a misleading impression of coverage.
Do not assume two edges mean two usable strips
If your plan involves dividing a wide border, ask whether that specific construction permits it and request a trial. The centre can contain connecting stitches or motifs that would be interrupted. Compare the resulting outlines and attachment margins before counting two strips from one width. Keep an undivided alternative in the selection until the cutting and sewing trial is accepted.
Request an edge-specific quotation
Send the reference, annotated full-width image, exposed edge and required quantity in metres or another agreed unit. Include motif direction where the border follows two sides of a garment. Ask the supplier to confirm the exact variant and usable width. This makes the edge treatment part of the order description instead of a detail left for production to interpret.

- Comparison uses the finished visible width.
- Any proposed dividing cut trialled before quantity conversion.
