Use a comparable measurement
Ask for weight against a defined sample length or a complete appliqué, excluding packaging. A weight for an unspecified bundle cannot help compare two borders. Record the exact reference, variant and unit alongside the measurement. For a garment with several components, calculate the combined decoration rather than deciding from the weight of a single small sample.
Hang the sample on the intended cloth
Attach a representative section using the proposed sewing method and hang the garment in its normal direction. Compare it with the undecorated cloth. Look for changes around the seam, shoulder or hem and let the sewing team assess whether support is needed. This trial is a design check, not a laboratory performance test or a guarantee of long-term behaviour.
Choose the effect, not a universal weight limit
A structured hem and a floating sleeve need different outcomes. Define whether the decoration should add body or preserve movement, then compare candidate samples for that placement. Avoid setting a universal grams-per-metre limit without testing your fabric and pattern. If the sample pulls the cloth more than desired, compare a narrower placement, another construction or a different reference.
Include weight in the purchase discussion
Send the reference, usable length or piece count per garment and the sample observations. Ask the supplier to confirm the proposed variant's dimensions and weight basis where available. Keep packing weight separate when requesting freight information. The appearance of dense beadwork alone cannot provide a reliable product weight, and the catalogue photograph should not be used to invent one.
- Weight basis: net length or complete piece.
- Hanging trial and desired silhouette.
- Combined garment use, separate packing weight.
